love notes

If you were to ask me to tell you one thing that I feel like I am really good at, I might tell you this.  I am good at letting my kids know I love them just the way they are.  I tell them often.  I hope they hear it. And I hope they feel it.

About a year ago I bought these cute little round tins at The Container Store… One for each of my children. They measure about 2 1/4 inches across. Each child hangs on to his/her own tin and adds these notes to them as I give them. At random times I leave notes for them on their pillows. Sometimes they’re words of advice, but mostly, they are just love notes. Sometimes I say things that are hard or awkward to say in person. Even after they move out, I can continue sending them these notes. I’m filling their little round tins with my heart

This has been a really, really cool thing between me and my kids! They don’t usually verbally acknowledge receiving the notes, but ever so often, when I check their tins, I find that their latest love note has been placed inside, right on top.  Yeah, that makes me pretty happy.  And the way that they communicate with me tells me that they feel safe, unjudged, and loved by me.

You’re doin’ good, mama!
