The Word of Wisdom is a health code that was given to the leaders and the saints of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, by the Lord. It was given, by revelation, through the Prophet Joseph Smith, on February 27, 1833.
In recent months, I have been studying the Word of Wisdom, in an effort to better understand it and find application for it in my life. My Patriarchal blessing speaks in detail about my responsibility to look after my own health, and that of my family. I am trying to figure out what “healthy” means. I feel like the Word of Wisdom is a sound, solid place to base my core health values. The prophets haven’t steered me wrong yet!
In all my reading and study, I have decided that there IS not one definition for the word “health”. In 1948 the World Heath Organization defined “health” as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” So I guess to be absolutely, totally, 100% healthy, one must have complete physical, mental and social well-being? (crickets chirping) Here’s the thing…. What IS complete physical, mental, and social well-being? It’s just not possible to be all of these things, all of the time. One could go crazy trying to be all of these things all of the time…. thus stifling their mental well-being! Oy-ve!
This dissection of the Word of Wisdom is truly for no one else but me – and possibly my family. I want to find personal meaning, and feel at peace about the choices I am making for my body, my mind, and my spirit. I want to be healthy and happy and not crazy, if you know what I mean. The following posts will likely be swimming in Word of Wisdom guts, as I methodically dissect it and share it with you…. whomever you are.
